Red Perilla Seeds (Perilla Frutescens Var. Crispa)
The purple or red perilla is called akajiso (red shiso), and is used to dye umeboshi (pickled ume) red or combined with ume paste in sushi to make umeshiso maki. It can also be used to make a sweet, red juice to enjoy during summer.
Shiso, equally well known as Perilla has a wonderful complex aroma. The taste is almost always said to be quite hard to describe; the words cinnamon, basil, anise, and citrus pop up in the attempts.
